$1,300 for 2 Volumes

This lavishly illustrated 2-volume set of books is considered to be the Bible for netsuke collectors and dealers. “MCI, the Meinertzhagen Card Index on Netsuke in the Archives of the British Museum,” Two Volumes, Part A and Part B. Edited by George Lazarnick; Alan R. Liss, Inc., New York, 1986. Hardback with dust jackets. Volume A, pages 1-584; Volume B, pages 585-1059. ISBN 0-8451-1704-1 (2 Volume Set). Black and white illustrations throughout; text in English.

The MCI Meinertzhagen Card Index represents the lifetime collection and study of netsuke by Frederick Meinertzhagen (1881-1962), one of the world’s foremost authorities on netsuke. Meinertzhagen realized the need for a single source that would provide the necessary information for netsuke collectors to fully appreciate their unique qualities. He indexed his entire collection, where it is currently on display at the British Museum library so that others might benefit from it. With the permission of the Museum, netsuke enthusiast George Lazarnick photographed the entire Index for publication, thereby creating a source that successfully presents this wealth of information to all serious collectors and dealers of netsuke.

The Index consists of two volumes with over 5,000 entries that provide detailed information on individual netsuke. Perhaps the most exciting and helpful aspects of the Index are the marvelously accurate drawings of netsuke done by Meinertzhagen. The cards provide a hand drawn facsimile of the artist’s signature, accurately recording the carver’s original calligraphy and his kakihan. Historical backgrounds, critical commentaries, notes on various artists and methods of collecting are included by Meinertzhagen on the cards, along with illustrations of some 100 unsigned netsuke. The book also includes photographs, correspondence, and personal insights by those who knew Meinertzhagen, providing a complete and detailed account of his life and work.

CONDITION is excellent. DIMENSIONS: 11 ¼” (29 cm) x 8 5/8” (22 cm). This two-volume set sells for over $2,000 on Amazon.

THE ARTS OF AN ADDICTION: QING DYNASTY OPIUM PIPES AND ACCESSORIES is a newly published (September 2005), exquisitely-illustrated, limited-edition book by Carlos Armero (Spain) and Ben Rapaport (USA), 219 pages, 11 ¼” x 8 ¾”, hard cover, dust jacket. Written by two avid collectors, this scholarly book contains more than 275 color and black and white images of opium pipes and related utensils, along with related graphic art, a chapter devoted to “where to see” and “where to buy”, and a selective up-to-date bibliography. The book is replete with dramatic and vivid evidence of the many unique and finely crafted, special-purpose artifacts once used for a habit that is best forgotten. What unfolds in the narrative is a richly detailed and rigorously researched historical retrospective of the various utensils and accouterments, most particularly the pipe, once used in the ritual of smoking opium in the mid-18th to early 19th century. It is a limited edition of 500 numbered and signed copies. Contact us to confirm availability; payment to and shipment from the author in USA. This lavish volume is a “must-have” reference for collectors and dealers!
